Dog Training Basics

There is never a perfect age to train your dog, but there can be a perfect time – right now! All dogs of any age can be trained no matter what the kind of behavior results or difficulty you are looking to overcome for from your pet. The longer you put off training, the harder it will become for your pet to adapt to that learned behavior. The majority of people try their hand at training their dog on their own, it can be a wise choice to seek out a professional dog trainer in your area in order help guide you, and help reach the results you are looking for.

Finding a dog trainer can be an extensive search depending on what types of problems you want to avoid with your pet. No matter the behavior problem training will help. Potty training, eliminating aggressive behavior, barking or just leash training can all be helped by the use of a professional dog trainer.

No matter if this is your first pet or one of many, each dog is different and no personality is the same and may require additional help from an outside source. Seeking out a dog trainer is not an admission of being an inadequate owner, but rather an owner that is serious about having a well-behaved dog that is desirable to be around.

There is less anxiety for both owner and pet when a dog knows its boundaries and limitations of what is expected on a daily basis. When using the services of a local dog trainer you too can become informed about the benefits of having a structured regime for your pet. Not only will your pet become well behaved, but also it will be a joy to have around and spend more time with at home, out in public or with other dogs.

Potty training your pet can happen in a variety of ways depending on how you wish to approach it personally. Often the more time you spend one-on-one with your pet for potty training, the easier it will be for both of you and the desired results will come faster.

Just like any part of dog training, the more effort you put into potty training the more you will get back from your pet. Using the skills from a local dog trainer can help the process so that you do not become easily frustrated with your new dog before they are fully trained.

Some professional dog trainer programs use a clicker in order to get an animal to generate a desired behavior. You may find that this type of training works well for your pet and you can continue the use of a clicker as time goes on to help train them in different areas as well. The only way to see if this type of dog training will work for your pet is to try it for yourself.

There are no rules about what training will work best for you and your pet. There are lots of resources available to you. The benefits of training are that there are many different methods used by local dog trainers, and you are free to choose which ones will work for you and your pet.

House training a new puppy is a bit tricky and sometimes very difficult and frustrating. However, in the long run, it is well worth the time. This will probably begin as soon as you bring your new puppy home, so a bit of preparation and patience is in order. Take a look at some information on housebreaking a puppy that might benefit you in this process.

There are many different opinions on the best way to train your dog. The main reason for this is that different species of dogs have differing attitudes. Some dogs are simply stubborn and will require extra patience, while other species may pick up the process quite easily. If you haven’t chosen a puppy yet, this might be worth taking into consideration.

Puppies, especially before 12 weeks of age, have a very hard time controlling their bowels and bladder. In time they will develop more control, but accidents are a certainty in the beginning. You need to approach this process with the proper mindset of understanding and patience. You will also need to exhibit consistency with your demeanor and techniques. Also understand that genetics, attitude, and temperament will play a big part in the issue. Some dogs simply pick up the habit better than others, which is something to consider when selecting a dog.

You should immediately begin implementing a schedule that will help the dog learn its responsibilities. Key times to take the dog out are first thing in the morning and immediately after eating, which are key times that the dog will need to go relieve itself. Between these times, take the puppy outside every couple of hours or so, depending on its needs. With a bit of anticipation, this process can be much simpler and easier to get through.

Watch your dog for typical signs that they need to go, including sniffing, pacing, and circling an area of the floor. If you catch them doing this, take them outside. When you catch the puppy in the middle of an accident, firmly tell him “no” and quickly take the puppy outside. Remember that you should never hit the dog and avoid other cruel tactics that simply do not work. Also remember that you should not punish a dog for using the bathroom inside if you did no specifically catch the dog in the middle of the act. If you take action after the fact, the dog will simply have no clue why it is being punished.

Many people utilize kennels and puppy pads. Dogs generally do not want to use the bathroom in a small area like a kennel, making them ideal for times when you leave the house. If you are gone for more than 4-6 hours, the dog may have no choice but to relieve itself, so be prepared for this. Be sure to take the dog outside before you leave and after you get home. Puppy pads are also a great tool for teaching a puppy to use the bathroom outside. An interesting trick is slowly and methodically moving the pad toward the door. Eventually, the dog will automatically go to the door when it needs to go.

Although housebreaking a puppy is difficult, it is far from impossible. Utilize these tips to make your job much easier. Quickly get the dog on an ideal schedule that will work for everyone involved. Also make use of great products like puppy pads and kennels to make the process easier. If you approach the issue with patience, understanding, and love, your dog will be trained before you know it.

Registering a dog is not obligatory as dog owners have the option to register or not to register the pet. Registering or not registering the dog will not make a difference to the enjoyment, companionship and entertainment you will have for choosing to have a dog for a pet.

Holding a kennel club registration certificate will not make the dog more affectionate and loyal as being registered or not will make no difference to the dog. Taking time to register the pet though is important as you may think of breeding the dog someday. Of course for a purebred dog to be mated with another purebred being registered with a kennel club is necessary. When a puppy is purchased the breeder should provide the new dog owner with a Dog Application Registration form as this will be needed in case the owner decides to register the dog.

Breeders of purebred dogs are required to register their dogs. Owners of companions dogs would not think of registering the pet. Registering the pet would give an owner benefits. A dog owner is not unlike a proud parent that would be more than pleased at the success of the pet. An owner will be very proud to show off the blue ribbons collected by the pet and needless to say joining kennel club competitions will only be possible if the dog is a registration number holder.

The dog can be registered in two of the major kennel clubs – the United Kennel Club and the American Kennel Club. The registration process can actually be done in minutes but an owner has to submit some requirements before the dog can be registered. For a dog to be accepted by the American Kennel Club it has to have three generations of confirmed parentage. The kennel clubs requires that the sire and dam as well as the litter must be registered.

Puppy buyers must be provided with Dog Registration Application form by the dealer. A dog owner can fill up a paper copy of the application or complete an online form. The name of the dog, the gender, the color and markings, the signatures of the owners of the rest of the litter as well as the name, address and signature of the owner of the dog being registered must be supplied. After the form is submitted and the registration fee paid, it normally takes several months before you can receive the registration certificate that will be mailed by the kennel club.

Taking care of your dog is a lot of work. Dogs need proper nutrition, exercise and much more. New pet owners may not know this when they first buy their new family bet but they quickly learn. Dogs are a lot of work.

Unlike humans, dogs can not fully grasp certain concepts. For example, you dog doesn’t understand that they can not leave your property for their own good. They don’t know that they will encounter many dangers if they wander off. They can get lost, hit by a car or worse.

The fact that you can not explain the dangers of leaving the backyard to your pet forces you to keep them leashed when they are outside and unsupervised. Being leased up in the backyard makes it very hard for your pet to run and get the proper exercise that they desperately need.

If you could just get your dog to understand that it is dangerous for them to leave the property, it wouldn’t be so bad leaving them outside. They would know that they needed to stay in the yard and you could leave them be unleashed. You wouldn’t need to worry and they could have much more fun.

If being able to let your dog run free in the yard, worry free, is something that interests you, you may want to consider purchasing a wireless dog fence. A wireless dog fences uses a wireless signal much like that of a cordless phone to help teach your dog the boundaries of your property.

Wireless dog fences are made up of two main parts, a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter transmits a wireless signal much like a cordless phone and the dog collar acts as a receiver. If your dog wanders outside of the transmitters range they will hear a warning beep and if the continue to roam away they will get a correction shock.

The “shock” is only to remind your dog that they have passed to far away from home. Over time your dog will learn the boundaries of your property and automatically stay within them. This is one of the easiest and most effective way to train your dog.

Wireless dog fences are very easily set up. Simply, choose a place in your home where you’d like to place the transmitter, set it to the distance you’d like your pet to be able to roam and that’s it. Your dog will be able to roam free outside with little to no supervision.

If you are looking to learn more about electric dog fence, you should take a look at invisible dog fence.

A pet owner would be annoyed by the dog’s habit of digging holes. Pet parents have to learn to live with the unwanted behaviors of the pet not only because dogs are well loved pets but also because these are innate behaviors of dogs. All dogs dig. Dogs are lovable and at times exasperating pets because unknowing that digging is an unacceptable behavior, the holes it has made on the garden would be presented to the master with a happily wagging tail.

The affectionate pet would think that it has helped the master with the gardening chore. Dogs are well loved pets but it would certainly be frustrating if the garden that eats a lot of your free time will be destroyed by the dog again and again. Dog owners would always want to be with the pet thus locking the dog in a kennel to prevent it from digging holes will not be a very good idea. Wouldn’t it be a better idea to know the reasons for the dog’s inclination to dig? Dealing with the reasons why the dog digs can be a better solution to modify the destructive behavior.

Boredom will be listed as one of the reasons why dogs develop the unwanted digging behavior. Boredom is always one of the reasons for the dog’s unacceptable behaviors. Dogs are not only energetic, they are also social animals. Not giving the dog opportunities to let off steam and opportunities to interact with the family or with other dogs will result to one bored dog that has the propensity to be destructive.

A dog may resort to digging holes to get the attention of the human family. In the eyes of the dog, the reprimands of an angry master would be more acceptable than being ignored. Another reason why dogs dig holes is to break away from confinement. Dogs love to roam. The sounds, the scents and the movements on the other side of the fence will always be interesting to an animal with a curious nature and we know how curious dogs are. To get to the other side, the dog will dig tunnels.

Digging is fun. Dogs are often seen digging when the weather is hot. A newly dug hole will be cool to the heated body of the dog. In the wild dogs have another purpose for digging holes – to store food. The dog would dig holes to be used for storage purposes not unlike the way we store food in refrigerators. Dogs will be seen digging holes to bury bones and other “treasures” that can be unearthed when food is scarce.

Dogs are very intelligent creatures but we owners should not assume that they have humans ability to comprehend and to separate what is right from what is wrong. A dog will not understand the reason why it was punished and vanished to a crate by jumping on an all dolled up master when jumping and giving sloppy kisses is its usual way of greeting.

What disciplinary methods can you use to manage a dog’s undesirable destructive chewing and excessive barking behaviors and control its tendency to chase and torment other pets and to eat spoiled food from the trash cans? Dogs can easily read our facial expressions and understand the meaning or our body movements. The dog may not understand that the destroyed bag has made the master angry but seeing the anger on the master’s face the dog would either slink under the table or have an imploring look on its face. But this does not mean that your designer shoes will be safe from the dog’s sharp teeth. To modify an unwanted and destructive behavior it is necessary for the dog to be disciplined. Screaming at the dog or inflicting physical punishment would never be a good idea more so if the punishment was given after the destructive deed was done. The dog would not learn anything and would never associate the smacking to the bag-chewing incident.

In a dog/human relationship, the human should always be viewed as the leader of the pack. Dogs being lower in rank must follow humans. Training would do a lot in preventing development of inappropriate behavior. Any kind of dog training is best started when the dog is still young. Commands to discipline a dog must given in an authoritative voice.

One effective way if disciplining the dog is to make the dog hate doing the destructive behavior . A spray bottle filled with cold water and Bitter Apple are effective tools that disciplines the dog not to manifest a destructive behavior.

It would be best to reprimand and correct the dog while the destructive act is being committed. Commands such as Stop, No and Leave it will prevent the dog from doing its destructive act. Disciplining the dog cannot be accomplished at once but consistent training that is reinforced with lots of praise and treats will eventually modify the dogs unwanted behavior.

Nothing is cuter than a puppy rumbling around your house, but have you taken into consideration what kind of a puppy you want? Well with so many dog breeds around these days you should find out which of these breeds would be very loyal to you. Well this question has a simple answer. A German Shepherd, it is a dog that can be easily trained and taught to perform various tasks.

While looking at German Shepherd dogs for adoption one needs to look at them very carefully as hereditary breeding has caused heath problems for them. These problems include hip and elbow dysplasia, digestive problems, epilepsy, chronic eczema, dwarfism, flea allergies and keratitis. The best way to ensure that you are getting a disease free puppy is by contacting a reputed breeder who would be able to provide you a certificate assuring the puppy’s health.

Since German Shepherd puppies are very friendly and very eager to learn new things, care must be taken to ensure proper training for them so that you have a well trained and obedient German Shepherd dog in the long run. The best way to ensure that your puppy is absorbing all what you are teaching it is by training it outdoors. This is also a method to maintain a puppy’s health.

While it is a fact that puppies enjoy going out for walks and playing outside, this is especially true in case of German Shepherd puppies. The walks can be used as a method to train your puppy to have good social behavior in the company of strangers. There is one other important thing that needs to be taken into consideration while training your puppy.

It is that the German Shepherd is a very intelligent dog. But without any kind of activity to keep it occupied its destructive tendencies seem to take over. This destructive tendency can be reduced through proper training and correct handling of the puppy. It is should be understood that you need to train your puppy with patience and be firm but gentle while handling it and nurture it with lots of love.

Grooming is one area that needs attention; grooming a German Shepherd is not a momentous task and is actually quite easy. All you need to do is brush your German Shepherd’s coat on a daily basis. The German Shepherd needs a bath only twice a year. Bathing a German Shepherd puppy more than twice a year can lead to loss of vital protective skin oils.

Even though there are many different breeds of puppies that you can think about getting, the German Shepard puppy is one who will provide you with loyalty and companionship all through its life.

Puppies are adorable pets for everyone. They look cute, are endearing companions and are fun to take care of. This may be true, but behind the fun is a lot of responsibility one needs to undertake to properly care for a puppy.

Each day in the United States, about five million puppies are born. Some thirty percent of American families own at least one dog. It is a sixty-day waiting period for the average puppy before they are born to their mothers. Puppies enter the world unable to properly smell, hear, or see. A puppy doesn’t open its eyes until it is about 10 to 15 days old. It takes about a month for a puppy to fully develop its sense of sight. Puppies are able to smell and hear in a similarly fast amount of time. By a puppy’s third or fourth week, their 28 temporary teeth would begin appearing. By their fourth month, their 42 permanent teeth begin to develop. You can help the process by getting some chew toys for your puppy. This would be important since puppies need to chew to accelerate the loss of their baby teeth.

Puppies are most comfortable when snuggled up close to their siblings and their mother. A puppy, ideally, would need about eight weeks before being separated from its mother and its siblings and being allowed to socialize with non-related dogs and its human owners.

When buying a puppy, do so with discretion. Think both of your needs as well as the concerns of other family members and neighbors. Hyperactive puppies generally cause a nuisance to people in the neighborhood. You will also need to be more concerned with taking good care of the puppy and protecting its welfare. Inform yourself properly by making the proper considerations. Consider the cleanliness of your surroundings – you may need to buy a dog house for your puppy. Take into consideration the size of the puppy and the size of the house where you live in. Do you need to regularly exercise your puppy? Most puppies need extra exercise to burn excess energy. What disposition are you looking for in a puppy? Will your puppy be easy or difficult to give a bath to? Is buying the right food for your puppy in your budget? Finally, consider your puppy’s need for veterinary care. Puppies need to be vaccinated once they reach 6-8 weeks, then would need booster shots at around 12 to 16 weeks.

If you know how to care for your puppy, they can be very enjoyable pets. Appreciate this fact. When naming your puppies, give it a name that matches its disposition – of course, you need to call it by a name. Puppies need to be showered with affection and attention, and given treats for a job well done. Your puppy would then reward you back with unconditional love. Loving your puppies can go a very long way.

The Weimaraner, and attractive and sturdy breed, was bred as a hunter of large animals. This is an active dog, and must have an active and attentive owner. Personality disorders are quite common in Weimaraners, and while not every owner will have issues with this trait, it is important to be aware that it is possible. Proper Weimaraner training will help to control these issues, and help them become well adjusted to their home.

This is a high energy dog that requires frequent exercise on a daily basis. They are easily excitable, and can easily knock people over if overexcited. They are not an appropriate breed for homes with small children. Weimaraners love to play, and will tirelessly chase a ball for hours. Keeping them active is imperative.

Because of their history as hunters, they are naturally driven to chase small animals. This is a part of their breeding, and not one of the personality traits they can show. Because of this extremely strong urge, they should never be roomed in a home that has smaller dogs or cats, as the result can be disastrous.

This dog was also bred as a guard for property and possessions. One of the undesirable personality disorders that can present itself is an possessiveness that could pose a danger to visitors. They can unexpectedly become aggressive and attempt to dominate anyone that they are unfamiliar with.

The Weimaraner is particularly susceptible to separation anxiety. This is not a pet that will wait patiently for his owner to come home from work. Many dogs that have separation anxiety can become destructive. They should be left alone for very short periods, especially in puppy hood, and do not do well in kennels or left alone in the backyard.

With proper and professionally guided training, these dogs can be socialized and trained very effectively. They are avid learners, picking up commands extremely quickly, and this training helps to solidify the relationship between dog and owner. The owner must constantly apply the training to retain dominance and stay in control of the animal.

Proper socialization and obedience training, along with extensive exercise on a regular basis can help to deter the negative personality traits of this beautiful and strong breed. Weimaraners can be wonderful pets as long as the owner has done their research and is willing to devote the time and energy required.

Known for their gentleness, playfulness, and loyalty, the Golden Retriever breed is a favorite among families. Families with children especially enjoy the characteristics of this breed.

Golden retrievers make great friendships with their family and learn many things quickly.

The breed loves and is certainly adept in the water. They will dive right in to fetch anything you throw, and are natural swimmers.

Training golden retrievers is often easier than other breeds, because of their willingness and desire to please their companions.

Golden Retrievers, as their name implies, have a natural instinct to chase and fetch objects. They respond well to simple commands such as “come”, “fetch”, etc.

Each family member should use the same command, such as “chase” or “fetch” to avoid confusing the animal.

Easy hand signals used in conjunction with commands will enhance the training

Undesirable behavior should be handled by ignoring the dog for a short time. However, desirable behavior should be rewarded with hugs or a tiny treat.

Afterwards, the animal will want to please his companion even more because he desires attention.

The most helpful advice about training your golden retriever is to just have fun and be relaxed.

You will definitely have your share of laughs with your Golden Retriever; they have a great sense of humor. Sometimes, instead of bringing the ball back, he will taunt you, insisting that you play a new game called “chase me”.

This breed offers wonderful friendship, and children love their gentle and playful attitude.

As I mentioned before the best thing to remember about training your golden retriever is to be relaxed , its easier than with others also golden retrievers are fast learners and its important to have fun with your golden retriever.
