Perfect Dog Collars

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

In this day and age, there seem to be dog supplies with all sorts of uses, corresponding to every need your pet has. The dog is not only taken care of but is also pampered. You, as the modern pet owner, want the best for your pet. So, your list of dog supplies should include a variety of items, tools, and food supplies.

You cannot ditch the dog food.

Obviously, if you do not buy your pet some food, it will eventually starve. So, if you are shopping for dog supplies, you should head to the food section first. Even families with small incomes can somehow manage to feed their dogs. If they can no longer do so, the only other option is to bring your pet to a shelter instead of leaving it to fend for itself. If you can afford to choose, however, shop for nutritious dog food. Your dog getting sick can mean more expenses.

Dog supplies for safety purposes

Buy dog supplies that will ensure the safety of you, your dog, and your neighbors. While you may be training a guard dog, it is still important to keep your dog within a safe distance. It must also be tied on a leash if you are going for a walk or if you have some visitors over.

Fashionable dog supplies

There are dogs that are bought as toys. They are cute, small and cuddly. Owners make them cuter by dressing them up with fashionable articles of clothing made especially for dogs. Even big dogs get to wear bigger shirts that could warm them up during the winter or simply dress them up. There are even accessories and pieces of jewelry made especially for your canine friend. Of course, in order to be fashionable, your dog should be kept clean with the use of bathing and grooming dog supplies.

Dog rugs and beds

Where does your dog sleep? If your dog sleeps at the foot of your bed and you have no problem with it, then that could be enough. However, don’t you want to wake up to a dog hair-free bed? If so, provide your dog with a rug or a bed, depending on your budget and the general temperatures of the place where you live.

Stuff for play

Toys and playtime are not just about having fun but also about keeping healthy. You do not even have to buy your pet’s toys from a pet shop. Your own toys, such as balls and Frisbees, will do.

Train your dog.

If you want to teach your dog some tricks or how to follow simple commands, you should provide it with supplies that can be used during the training. You could make use of its own toys or you could use of other things recommended by a trainer. It is astonishing how dogs now have whole shops selling things that are made especially for them.

It seems that there would be more items to come in the future. The basic needs of a dog are not the only ones addressed here but also the need of the owner to find new ways of pampering his or her pet.

A Well Behaved Dog

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

It is very difficult to say no to your dog when they look at you so lovingly. Dogs don’t miss curfews or talk disrespectfully to their owners, so why not give them a bite of your dinner? One table scrap will turn them into perpetual table side beggars. Successful dog training relies on consistency.

Do you envy the dog owner whose dog follows the instruction manual? Loyally walks on their left side and stops walking when their owner stops? Sits on command?

Training requires a disciplined and patient dog owner. It is easy to cave in when your dog just wants your attention and doesn’t want to listen to your commands. Reward your dog for good behavior. Positive reinforcement is more effective than punishment. Physical punishment will make your dog afraid of you and break down the trust you are trying to establish.

Housebreaking is one of the first aspects involved in dog training. With a 95% success rate Poochie-Bells are recommended by professional trainers. No more whining, barking or waiting by the door, your pooch can be trained to ring the bells when they need to go outside. The bells are strategically placed on a heavy duty designer durable grosgrain ribbon to accommodate small and large breeds. Poochie Bells are portable, there are no batteries or wires so dog owners can remain consistent with housebreaking wherever you and your pooch happen to be.

Using a dog leash and either a choke collar or martingale collar, command the dog to sit/stay and slackening the leash. Then command the dog to come. If the dog doesn’t come then give the lead a gentle tug while at the same time issuing the command again.

Leash training with the restrain collars also teaches your dog not to pull while you are walking your dog. If your dog is controlling you, by pulling, give the leash a quick yank to the side. This is an effective and harmless dog instruction that will make walking your dog a pleasurable experience. Remember you are the pack leader and need to have control of your dog.

Sometimes hand gestures or visual commands are used in the early stages of dog training. When you are in a dog park and there is a lot of noise and distractions, a visual command is extremely effective. For example the universal hand signal for the come command is to fully outstretch your arms horizontally on each side then bring, them to meet in front of your stomach.

Speak your dog’s language. Whether it is through hand gestures or verbal commands, a dog is eager to please their owner. Being praised and rewarded when they behave appropriately is part of the consistency of dog training.

Having a happy and properly socialized pet requires teaching and direction from the owner. Joanne Gallagher is an expert in dog training and recommends visiting Jake’s Dog Housefor tasty dog treats to reinforce your dogs excellent behavior.

Why Coupler Leads Come In Handy

Monday, March 1st, 2010

Did you recently get a second dog? Are you wondering how you are going to walk both dogs at the same time? The answers to these questions are coupler leashes.

Nylon coupler leashes are the answer. They allow dog owners to walk more than one dog at the same time. And the best part is that you do not have to buy a new leash. They will work great with a leash you already own.

When you use two leashes there can be little control with your dogs. They do not have to walk close to each other, which may cause them to walk in opposite directions or quickly tangle each others leashes. Coupler leashes connect two dogs to your leash so you do not have to worry about using two separate leashes for the dogs.

Coupler leashes, however, get rid of the need to have two leashes. You will only have the need of one leash, which will free up your hands. It also keeps you from having to worry about your dogs fighting you on the walk, since they will be close enough to each other that they will not fight each other to walk in separate directions.

The nylon webbing of the coupler leads are very strong, making it a good choice for a leash. Nylon couplers also come in different lengths to fit varying needs. That way if the owner prefers using shorter or longer lengths on the coupler, they have that option.

Most couplers use two legs, but if you have more than two dogs additional leads can be added to the coupler. Couplers with more than two leads usually need to be custom made. This can be important for professional dog walkers.

Coupler leashes can be made to fit your style as well. They come in a variety of colors, such as pink, black, purple, red, orange, etc. They also can come in a neon variety so they can be visible in low light.

No one wants to have to fight against their dogs who want to go in separate locations. Couplers allow you to take a walk with both dogs, and not have to worry about the struggle that walking with two leashes would provide. A Coupler leash is a great option for an owner of more than one dog.

Often times owning one dog is not sufficient. But how do you walk both dogs at the same time? Jim Witt manufactures some of the finest designer dog coupler leashes and suggests browsing to Country Brook Design for custom dog accessories.

Key Things to Consider When Buying An Outdoor Dog Bed

Friday, February 26th, 2010

As your pup gets a bit older, you’ll want to continue to provide her with a nice, comfy sleeping arrangement. Similarly to their human owners, dogs receive many advantages from appropriate bedding including increases in energy as well as a better overall level of health that a good night’s sleep insures them. It’s very easy to understand that the kind of dog bed that you choose for your dog could be just as important to your dogs happiness as the dog food, and amount of exercise that you provide.

Keep in mind how much time your young dog is outdoors. Outdoor dog beds provide an excellent spot for her to rest and relax outside when she may need to. Outdoor heated dog beds are a great choice because they will keep your dog warm and cozy outside no matter what the temperature is, and they are an especially good choice for dogs with arthritis.

Advantages to Your Dog’s Health

A heated dog bed can be greatly beneficial in allowing your dog live a healthier life. The heat that radiates from one of these beds will help keep the achy joints of a dog with arthritis at ease. The outdoor heated dog bed will also improve blood flow which can alleviate discomfort from sore muscles that can sometimes occur with the onset of old age. Because of this, you will notice that your dog has more energy and seems returned to its youthful self again. Newborn pups can see some advantages, too. When it’s time for your puppy to leave the litter, and the warmth and security of her mother, you can help ease her into your home with a heated bed.

Most outdoor heated dog beds you can buy are durable and warrantied to last a long time against normal wear and tear. This is fantastic news because we have all seen the havoc pets can wreak on a new piece of furniture! Most heated dog beds are built specifically to withstand the harsh outside elements, so you know they’ll remain in good condition for several years before you need to get another one. With superior durability, there is no need to worry about your dog’s comfort. These beds are created to have better orthopedic advantages that few other beds on the market can compete with.

Just remember that you don’t need to spend a fortune to get a really good heated dog bed. The low end beds cost about $40 and the priciest models may run a few hundred dollars more but this an incredibly reasonable price if you consider the quality of the product and it is still substantially cheaper than the bed you sleep on at night! Is $200 too much to spend on an improved quality of life and the wonderous increased energy your puppy will receive from the bed? Not too many will argue that a quality bed is vital to one’s overall mood and well-being. Your dog will greatly benefit from the health advantages of having an outside heated dog bed that they can sleep peacefully in.

Things to Look For With Kennel Leads

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Kennel leads allow you to have a better handle on your dog. They have many good uses. Here are a few important things to remember when searching for grooming and kennel leads.

Kennel and Grooming leads make it possible to keep your dog located in one spot. This can be very handy during grooming sessions, or when transporting your dog. They can also be beneficial during dog shows.

Kennel leads are made to be very strong. The best quality leads are made from nylon and polypro webbing. Nylon webbing is very strong and durable. Polypro, while not as strong as nylon, still offers good, sturdy, quality material.

The kennel and grooming leads come in a variety of lengths and widths. The average length is usually around six feet. Most sizes are “one size fit all”, though there are other sizes available for larger or smaller than average dogs.

Kennel leads should be very durable. Many are resistant to abrasions. They also can be made to resist absorbing liquids, which has the added bonus of the color of the lead not fading so quickly.

Don’t settle for a dull looking lead. Dog leads come in a variety of stylish finishes and colors. Find an attractive lead that fits your style.

Dog leads are supposed to be strong, but they also should be comfortable to your dog. Nylon and polypro webbing allow your lead the strength it needs to get its job done, but they are also both non-abrasive. If any rings are on the lead, they should also be non-abrasive to reduce any friction that may happen.

There are many reasons to buy a kennel lead. They give you control of your animal, whether it be to restrain them or keep them in place. They are a popular choice for animals that have to wait in waiting rooms for animal hospitals, or during tie downs. It can also be great for other general leash purposes.

Kennel leads offer many advantages to dog owners. The lead has an extra handle close to the dogs neck for extra control. Jim Witt suggests visiting Country Brook Design for a broad selection of Kennel Leads in many colors and lengths.

Sleeping like a Dog

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

Want a relaxing stress free life. Look at a sleeping dog and take notes.

Dogs typically sleep for around 12 hours every day. Some breeds sleep more than others. Large Breeds like the Saint Bernard, Newfoundland and Irish Wolfhound have been known to sleep up to 18 hours of the day. This is also true for older dogs.

Even though a dog sleeps for 12 hours or more a day, they are still aware of their surroundings. If it is not time for a walk, pet, play or food, dogs tend to sleep. Sometimes they are tired, especially after an afternoon at the dog park and other times its just boredom.

Did you ever feel like you could fall asleep standing up? Your faithful companion can be standing or sitting next to you, and the eyelids start to droop and the next thing you know they lie down and are a sleep. Amazing! The lids close and legs are jerking.

Dogs sleep patterns are similar to their owners. Their first stage of sleep is rapid eye movement, REM. During this stage of sleep you will notice your dog’s eyes moving under the eyelids and an occasional leg jerk. This is typically the dreaming stage. Are they really dreaming? Unfortunately they don’t communicate their dreams to their owners.

Once a dog rolls over onto their back and stretch out their legs and begin snoring, they are in a sound sleep. No tense muscles from being curled up in a ball, pure relaxation!

Have a clean and comfortable place in your home where your dog can rest feeling safe and secure. It is their natural instinct to be in a sheltered place, under a table or in a corner. Before a dog lies down, they circle the spot they intend to lay down to sleep. It is helpful if you provide a bed that is a comfortable soft dog bed that caters to the sheltered instinct.

Dog owners may not get 12 hours of sleep each day, but we can learn from our pet’s nature to slow down and more often. Stretch out, release your tension and SNORE!

Dogs enjoy being warm and snugly when they are tired and want to take a nap. A comfy dog bed is the perfect solution. Joanne Gallagher suggests visiting Jake’s Dog House for a wide assortment of Comfortable Dog Beds.

Walking a Dog on a Harness

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

A lot of people like the say the phrase “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” This is a very fitting saying when training dogs. It is especially true when trying to train a dog to walk on a leash.

It is far easier to train a puppy than an adult dog. Teaching your dog while they are young will help them avoid bad habits, and save you a lot of frustration in the long haul. A good way to train a puppy is to use a dog harness.

A dog harness will give you control because it is placed around your dog’s torso. This will allow your puppy’s entire body to learn how to walk, instead of just moving the head. A harness allows you more control because you can pull back on your dog with little fear of hurting your dog.

When you are teaching a puppy to learn to walk with a leash you may have to pull and tug on the leash to get them to pay attention. Dog collars, if not put on correctly, can actually do more harm than good. Pulling hard on an ill-fitted collar can damage your dog’s throat.

The best training technique is one that is pain free. That is why a harness can be so helpful. When you begin your training make sure you walk at your pace and not your dogs.

Starting out slowly helps your dog learn to not pull or push against you. Once they start walking slower and at your pace, walk a little faster and see how your dog does. When they are able to walk your pace and keep slack in the leash, you have succeeded for the most part with your dog leash training.

Eventually you want to get the dog to keep pace with you and not pull against the leash. Have a strong grip on the leash when you are training. Start out with a short leash and slowly give them more and more of the leash as they learn to keep slack in the leash.

Training a puppy can be a lot of work, but it is a lot easier than training an adult dog. If you do happen to have a dog that needs to be trained check out our previous article about training a dog not to pull against your leash. We also have another article with tips in there for adult dog owners, and reasons why a training collar could be a more appropriate choice than a full body harness.

Training a puppy will help them avoid bad habits. A good way to train a puppy is to use a dog harness. Jim Witt is and an accomplished designerof high quality dog harnesses and recommends browsing to Country Brook Design.
