Pet Supplies For A First Time Pet Owner

Monday, February 8th, 2010

The number of types of pet supplies is as unlimited as the different types of pets you can have. You should do research on what you need and why. Then talk to an associate at a pet store. If you already know why you need certain things, you can then make sure you are not talked into buying something you do not need.

One thing to keep in mind is that any good pet store that is truly pet friendly will give you a discount on your supplies if your pet is a rescue. They do this to decrease the number of animals that need to be put down at a shelter. Some stores have been known to give certain items for free or give up to eighty percent off all of your costs.

You may feel the urge to buy all the items a pet may need in its lifetime all in one go. People do the same thing with new babies. Keep in mind that you have no idea what this animal’s personality is like or what they might prefer. Oddly enough, many animals tend to like playing in inexpensive items like cardboard boxes.

By buying just a few toys at a time, you can end up saving a lot of money when you discover the animal does not like them. Think how much worse it would be if you spent hundreds. You should instead make sure you have enough money for any shots or procedures done to ensure the safety of the animal. Make sure you have the correct habitation, food, and any restraints you may need.

Training your animal should be another area of expense when it comes to supplies. Litter boxes and kennels need to be of the appropriate size and quality. If you have a dog, get baby gates to put up so it knows which rooms are off limits. It will also help in terms of bladder control if the dog is not near any carpets.

With a new animal in your house, you will probably be feeding it something different than the previous care taker. Ask what the pet had been eating before you got it. Try to feed it the exact same thing–brand and flavor, if applicable–in order to keep your animal’s digestive system running.

Slowly wean the animal onto a brand of your choice by mixing a little more of the new food into the old every day until eventually the animal is only eating new food. This should take a least a few weeks. Many people do this if the previous owners were using food that is too expensive or not nutritious enough.

Though it is tempting to want to skip on buying food supplies, never feed an animal human food. It is not meant for them. Some animals can eat it without any health problems, others cannot. Why try to find out? It also is not good for them in the long run and will cause them to try to get into your food.

The Expansiveness Of Pet Stores

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

Pet stores today are like little shopping plazas. You can find pretty much any pet you could want and all their accessories.

You will still mainly see dogs and cats. Cages and crates are full of adorable cuddly critters. And of course all of their food is here, in great quantities. The selections are vast and vary from puppies and kitties to senior pets. Usually pet stores carry all of the higher-end brands and a few mid-priced too. There will be varieties of flavors, and food that meets certain needs. For instance, you will see cat food specially made for indoor cats or for outdoor cats.

Along with foods and treats, there are also a variety of supplements. One very common supplement is glucosamine, which is good for arthritis and joint problems. But it doesn’t end there; you will find vitamins, fish oils, even water treatments that help keep teeth clean.

Dog houses, Kitty condos, beds and a large selection of toys are always right in arm’s reach. So are water purifiers, leashes and collars and cat litter. These are probably things you would expect to find at the pet store. But I bet every time you go, you can find something new that you never thought of or saw before. A massage blanket for your dog or cat might be one of those things.

After taking care of the dogs and cats, check out the fish in the pet stores. Whether salt water or fresh water, the tanks are full of colorful finned creatures. Goldfish are not just goldfish; even they come in multiple breeds. Other water life is here, like frogs, snails and corals. Aquarium setups range from little betta bowls to 200 gallon tanks.

A good idea for aquariums is live plants. These are perfect for keeping oxygen levels right and give a nice homey feeling to your finned friends. A lot of fish like to hide or graze in these plants. Plants also add a nice realistic look to the tank. You can find plants that grow up from the floor of the tank and mossy types that float on the top.

Don’t forget about birds and rodents. You’ll be able to hear the chirps and yells from parrots and parakeets the moment you step inside. And if you listen carefully, you can also hear the squeaks from mice, rats and hamsters. Accessories for them, like wood chips and play wheels are always in stock. Snakes, ferrets and iguanas will also grab your attention.

One great thing is that the majority of pet stores will let you bring your pets into the store with you. Once inside, you can drop your furry buddy off to have his nails and hair done or to get a nice bath. Veterinarians are usually on staff too, so you can plan your shopping trips around your dog’s doctors appointments.

Pet stores can be as big as department stores. You may spend hours inside and not be bored. Bringing your pet along will make his day and will make shopping for pet supplies more fun.

Pets are loyal and loving creatures that provide great companionship at home. Visit the pet stores Brampton to choose from a variety of interesting animals, including birds, kittens, and puppies Toronto.
