There are many reasons to begin a training regime with your pet. You may want to stop an animal’s bad behavior such as clawing or chewing the furniture. You may want to keep him under control in social situations. Or you may want to teach him to perform tricks on command. In any case, the animal will benefit both from the mental exercise required and from the time and attention you give him. The most satisfying form of pet training uses positive reinforcement.

Animals naturally learn to repeat actions that lead to desirable outcomes. Positive reinforcement works by rewarding pets when they do something right as opposed to punishing them when they do something wrong. Rewards in the form of a human praise combined with a food treat are highly effective.

You’ve probably already trained your pet through positive reinforcement without realizing it. If a dog or cat scratches at the door and you open it, they learn to associate the behavior of scratching with the reward of going outside. You reinforce the behavior every time you let them out when they scratch.

To train pets to do what you want them to do, you’ll need to get them to perform actions in response to commands. Decide on a specific desired behavior and think of a cue word to prompt it. Single syllable commands such as ‘down’ or ‘shake’ are easier for animals to understand than two word phrases like ‘lie down’ or ‘shake hands’.

As soon as your pet performs an action in response to a command, reward him with enthusiastic praise and a tasty treat. Always give the reward before the animal engages in any other behavior. If you are teaching a dog to obey the command ‘sit’, praise and feed him while he is still in a sitting position. If he moves first, he may think he is being rewarded for standing up.

To teach an animal to get off the bed or sofa, chose a simple command like ‘off’. When you find your pet sitting on the furniture, get a food treat and hide it in your hand. Stand over the animal, loudly and clearly say ‘off’ and gently push her to the floor. Immediately praise her and hold the treat to her mouth. Do this every time you catch her sitting where she’s not allowed. Eventually, she will jump off the furniture in response to your command, without the accompanying push.

When an animal has learned to reliably respond to the cue word, you can gradually stop rewarding her with treats. But do persist in offering praise and affection in return for good behavior. Dogs are eager to please their owners and generally require no other motivation. Depending on their individual personalities, and the extent to which they have bonded with their owners, some cats and birds will also continue to obey commands once the food incentive is withdrawn.

Pet training requires a degree of patience and some sessions will go more smoothly than others. When an animal is excited, distracted or tired, he may not perform at his best. Avoid the temptation to chastise your pet if he refuses to cooperate. It could lead him to associate the action you are trying to teach with negative consequences. If your pet gets only positive attention during dog training Kelowna, he will be eager to learn new commands.

Training a puppy can be frustrating, dog training requires discipline and consistancy. When experiencing problems, consult a professional. Bark Busters offer a reliable and affordable service for house puppy training.

Dog owners are not surprised if the pet is seen walking in circles as this behavior is common in dogs. Walking in circles is a canine habit that was handed down by the dog's ancestors. As primitive dogs would sleep anywhere, they need to make the chosen place a bit comfortable and this can be done by walking around to trample the vegetation. Dogs in the wild unlike today's dogs don't have the luxury of sleeping in comfortable beds as they normally curl down on the snow or on the dirt covered ground. Continue reading →

Walking in circles is a normal behavior of dogs. The modern day dog’s habit of walking in circles is a carryover trait from their ancestors. As primitive dogs would sleep anywhere, they need to make the chosen place a bit comfortable and this can be done by walking around to trample the vegetation. Dogs that survived in the wild would bed any where – on the snow, on vegetation or on hard ground.

A dog will then walk around and around in the chosen area to flatten the vegetation to be able to sleep more comfortably. This behavior is also associated with self preservation. Walking in circles before lying down is done to ensure that no poisonous insects or snakes are hiding in the sleeping area. Walking in circles is also done to make sure the chosen bedding area is safe and that they will not be attacked by predators while they are sleeping. Dog owners would know that when the pet inside the house walks around in circles they have to act – fast as it is a sign that the dog is about to defecate.

Being social animals, dogs would always want to interact with the family. The dog will continuously walk in circles especially if encouraged by the applause and the laughter of the family. Walking around in circles is a behavior that is often seen in dogs and cats. Walking around in circles is normally not dangerous but dog owners must be aware that this habit can be a sign that the pet has an underlying medical concern.

A dog with an injured inner ear will lose its sense of balance given that the ear is one of the balance centers of the body. Ear mite infestation and ear infection that severely damage the ears can be the reason why the dog is walking in circles. Pet antibiotics and ear washes can make the dog walk in circles if these medications and formulations have a negative effect on the dog.

Although walking in circles is a normal behavior of dogs, a pet owner wanting to rule out medical reasons would take the dog to a vet as in some cases the dog that is walking in circles can have canine distemper, vestibular diseases or systemic lupus erythematosus. Balance and voluntary movements are controlled by the cerebellum of the brain. A tumor that develops in the cerebellum can make the dog lose its coordination and sense of balance thus it would walk in circles.

Humans and dogs have formed strong attachments because these affectionate and loyal animals have become the dependable companions, helpers and protectors of man. Because dogs are much loved it would not be uncommon for a pet owner to view the pet as a member of the family. Some dog owners would even care for the dog as if it is a baby.

Dogs are kissed and cuddled and allowed to share the bed of the master. Being considered as family members, the well being of the pet is of prime importance thus a dog owner would worry if something unusual is noticed about the pet. Some pet parents would even over react and would rush to the vet if the dog is noticed to be off color.

Dog owners that get too attached to the pet can’t seem to take their eyes off the beloved “baby” so that every little unusual movement of the pet is noticed. Dogs normally twitch when they sleep but pet parents not aware of this fact would worry and think that the twitching is a seizing episode. Sleeping dogs are known to twitch every few seconds and as most dog owners are aware of canine seizures, the twitching of the pet would cause the owner to worry.

Seizing and twitching are involuntary movements that can be noticed in sleeping dogs. A seizure can be distinguished from switching as in seizing episodes, the dog would have stiffer movements. A seizing dog will be difficult to rouse as they will not respond to the voice of the master. A twitching dog on the other hand can be easily roused from sleep. A twitching dog would easily respond to a pat or to the voice of the master. A seizing dog on the other hand would be unresponsive and one that seizes repeatedly must have immediate medical attention.

Just like their human friends, dogs too would dream when they are sleeping deeply. The dog acting up a dream may growl, snap at insects and may pedal the legs as if running. A dog dreaming of falling would twitch to stop the fall. Twitching is basically a normal behavior but there are instances when the twitching dog has a medical concern. Distemper will cause a dog to twitch. An advance stage of canine distemper will have serious effects on the dog’s neurological system so that the pet will twitch continuously.

At Sarah’s Dogs you can find out more about why dogs twitch in their sleep as well as first aid for dogs.

Dog Training Basics

There is never a perfect age to train your dog, but there can be a perfect time – right now! All dogs of any age can be trained no matter what the kind of behavior results or difficulty you are looking to overcome for from your pet. The longer you put off training, the harder it will become for your pet to adapt to that learned behavior. The majority of people try their hand at training their dog on their own, it can be a wise choice to seek out a professional dog trainer in your area in order help guide you, and help reach the results you are looking for.

Finding a dog trainer can be an extensive search depending on what types of problems you want to avoid with your pet. No matter the behavior problem training will help. Potty training, eliminating aggressive behavior, barking or just leash training can all be helped by the use of a professional dog trainer.

No matter if this is your first pet or one of many, each dog is different and no personality is the same and may require additional help from an outside source. Seeking out a dog trainer is not an admission of being an inadequate owner, but rather an owner that is serious about having a well-behaved dog that is desirable to be around.

There is less anxiety for both owner and pet when a dog knows its boundaries and limitations of what is expected on a daily basis. When using the services of a local dog trainer you too can become informed about the benefits of having a structured regime for your pet. Not only will your pet become well behaved, but also it will be a joy to have around and spend more time with at home, out in public or with other dogs.

Potty training your pet can happen in a variety of ways depending on how you wish to approach it personally. Often the more time you spend one-on-one with your pet for potty training, the easier it will be for both of you and the desired results will come faster.

Just like any part of dog training, the more effort you put into potty training the more you will get back from your pet. Using the skills from a local dog trainer can help the process so that you do not become easily frustrated with your new dog before they are fully trained.

Some professional dog trainer programs use a clicker in order to get an animal to generate a desired behavior. You may find that this type of training works well for your pet and you can continue the use of a clicker as time goes on to help train them in different areas as well. The only way to see if this type of dog training will work for your pet is to try it for yourself.

There are no rules about what training will work best for you and your pet. There are lots of resources available to you. The benefits of training are that there are many different methods used by local dog trainers, and you are free to choose which ones will work for you and your pet.

Taking care of your dog is a lot of work. Dogs need proper nutrition, exercise and much more. New pet owners may not know this when they first buy their new family bet but they quickly learn. Dogs are a lot of work.

Unlike humans, dogs can not fully grasp certain concepts. For example, you dog doesn’t understand that they can not leave your property for their own good. They don’t know that they will encounter many dangers if they wander off. They can get lost, hit by a car or worse.

The fact that you can not explain the dangers of leaving the backyard to your pet forces you to keep them leashed when they are outside and unsupervised. Being leased up in the backyard makes it very hard for your pet to run and get the proper exercise that they desperately need.

If you could just get your dog to understand that it is dangerous for them to leave the property, it wouldn’t be so bad leaving them outside. They would know that they needed to stay in the yard and you could leave them be unleashed. You wouldn’t need to worry and they could have much more fun.

If being able to let your dog run free in the yard, worry free, is something that interests you, you may want to consider purchasing a wireless dog fence. A wireless dog fences uses a wireless signal much like that of a cordless phone to help teach your dog the boundaries of your property.

Wireless dog fences are made up of two main parts, a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter transmits a wireless signal much like a cordless phone and the dog collar acts as a receiver. If your dog wanders outside of the transmitters range they will hear a warning beep and if the continue to roam away they will get a correction shock.

The “shock” is only to remind your dog that they have passed to far away from home. Over time your dog will learn the boundaries of your property and automatically stay within them. This is one of the easiest and most effective way to train your dog.

Wireless dog fences are very easily set up. Simply, choose a place in your home where you’d like to place the transmitter, set it to the distance you’d like your pet to be able to roam and that’s it. Your dog will be able to roam free outside with little to no supervision.
